Summer Vacation

I love summer vacation. We are only a week into it, so my tune may change, but so far, I feel like a kid on MY own summer break. Our days are filled with play dates, skateboarding, guitar lessons, art camp, bike riding, a neighborhood kid's camp, sprinkler running, and a homemade "robot camp" and "dinosaur camp" which are actually disguised summer homeschooling (shhhhh....don't tell. Practicing writing is "fine motor skills for better robot making," math is "essential for any good robot maker," and "dinosaurs love shapes!"). I'm pretty sure we have checked out half the books in our library about both topics.

Today was the first day we went swimming. My hope is to take the kids swimming once a week. But after the hassle of it, I wonder. You have to find all the stuff - the swimsuits that inevitably get put in a strange drawer, the goggles, the water toys, a bag to carry it in, towels, sunscreen, bug spray, a swimmer diaper for Evan, and now there is a "DOUBLE DIAPER" rule at our pool thanks to the nasty outbreak of Crypto a few years ago (and I will happily put him in 3 diapers if I don't have to get crypto again - yuck!!!). So after a good thirty minutes of running around the house collecting all the swimming stuff, forgetting things, running back to the car, trying to find a way to hide my money and phone in the bag we'll take in, we finally are ready. On the way to the pool the kids were very excited. I asked Evan if he was ready to swim, and he said......

"No, I want to float in a coconut!"

And here is a "robot camp" project. We found an old robot at DI for a dollar, and the boys were delighted to take it apart and find all the gears, motors, and wires:

You are one tricky mom! Nice work.

I took Elijah swimming last week and it was fun, but all that prep work really is exhausting! Plus it's expensive. We hit the Legacy Center and I couldn't believe how pricey it was. Next time it's Jim's turn.

How fun to read this summer post from you. You guys sure know how to have fun. I'm going to have to send my kids to you for summer camp next year.

Colleen - I thougt it was pricey too. Especially since Evan was done after an hour. I guess I need to clean out our inflatable pool and use that more often. If only Miles could learn to swim in it! :)

Jessica, just let me know what kind of a summer camp your kids would like and I'll put one together. :)

Kiki - Thanks! :) Crypto is a nasty bug that isn't killed by chlorine and it can cause the WORST stomach cramps and long-lasting diarreah....not fun! The first year of the outbreak alomst every pool in Utah had to be shut down and completely cleaned out. So now they make all kids, ages 3 and under, wear a simming diaper and a diaper cover in addition to their swimming suits. And we've had all these lovely commercials about not going swimming if you've had diarreah in the last 2 weeks.

That robot ended up having about 5 million pieces on the counter and Miles had to take apart every single one.
