Mother Goose

Tonight Mother Goose will fill the kid's shoes with a little treat and a little toy. I was visited by Mother Goose (I would love a copy of this print, by the way) every year on News Years Eve since I was born. If you are also visited by Mother Goose we probably share the same grandma. We used to think the tradition of Mother Goose was a Danish custom, but later we found out my grandma made the whole thing up to make New Years Eve more exciting for kids. My grandma is wonderful like that. She really wants kids to enjoy things. But I remember one year when Mother Goose was not a welcome visitor. We were all staying at my grandma's house and I was sleeping in a room with my sisters and some cousins. I'm sure we stayed up too late in our excitement and someone may have even told a scary story. In my heightened state I was SURE I saw the shadow of a goose. It's one thing to receive a gift from the old woman riding on a goose, it's another thing to witness it. And I wasn't ready to see this goose walking around my grandma's apartment hiding our shoes. So I hunched up in that back room and stared at the shadow, hoping it wouldn't come in where we were. Despite that traumatic night I have always loved our Mother Goose and have been happy to continue the tradition for my kids.

Happy 2009!
