European Trip
Last year my parents had some exciting news. Just as we thought they were both going to retire, my dad decided to work for a couple more years, but not in the same office he'd been working at for 32 years. He had taken a job with the Army to be a contract dentist in Germany. Being the thoughtful and attentive child/in-law/grandchildren that we are (haa!) we knew we would need to plan a visit.
Finally, after almost a year of planning, we took our trip to Germany, and we were also fortunate to visit France and Austria. While I was in the planning stage for this trip, I had some concerns about taking the kids on such a long trip. The flight was 11 hours - and that's just the time in the air. Adding in time sitting in the airport, going through security, etc...it is really much longer than that. They did great. I loved showing them where we were on the map that the plane showed periodically, marking the path of our flight over Canada, Iceland, the UK, and down to Germany. It's all very surreal. Our plane was so big that it felt like we were in a jumbo bus, and we didn't have window seats, so we just had to take the screens word for it that we were where we were.
The trip itself was the perfect mix of fun and learning and culture for all of us. Different languages, different food, an obsession with recycling, lots of cathedrals and castles, boat rides, train rides and sight seeing - I think we all got an appreciation for Europe and travel, and many memories that we'll never forget.
Now we just need to plan when we'll go back!
