Happy Birthday Miles

Six years ago I went to my OBGYN covered in hives. Every limb on my body was covered in swollen, itchy bumps. My kind doctor took pity on me that day and admitted me to the hospital to be induced. Mark and I will never forget the feeling of driving to the hospital knowing we were coming back with a baby. Very surreal. As a newborn, Miles and I had some trouble with nursing. Sometimes I think the hives and the nursing were the price I had to pay to get my sweet Miles. Each hive, each episode with the nursing shield, helping me to appreciate this treasure that was mine...this little boy that had turned me into a mother.

Talking from a very young age, Miles has always kept us entertained and surprised by his maturity. His recent devotion to all things robot has given him a goal, and he is absolutely determined to do what it takes to become a robot maker. At church on Sunday he was drawing pictures of robots, but he was crossing out each picture, saying it wasn't good enough. After several attempts he looked at me and said, "What if I can't be a good robot maker when I grow up?" Then he looked at me even more earnestly and said, "I'm afraid I'll have to be something boring.....like an engineer."

We are amazed at what a big year this has been for Miles. He started kindergarten and reads like a pro. He's looking forward to eating lunch at school next year. He has learned and performed Cat Stevens, Willie Nelson, Bob Dylan, The Beatles, and The Flaming Lips on his guitar. We feel like our 6-year-old is going to be 16 before we know it.

This morning Miles was thrilled to see some balloons tied to his chair and a candy bar. Seeing the candy bar, Evan wanted it to be his, as any 2-year-old would. I had to explain to Evan that it was Miles' birthday treat. Miles looked at his 100 Grand candy bar, felt the package, and said, "It's okay, this candy bar is broken into two pieces, so Evan can have one." That pretty much sums up who Miles is.

Happy 6th Birthday Miles! I love you more than you'll ever know.
