Thankful for: running

Running update: The dog who chased me all the way home hasn't been out this week. Last week he actually chased my car up the street! But, being tired of having to double back to avoid his street, I ran boldly past the dog's house (ok, not very boldly, I kept checking over my shoulder, ready to bolt to the other side of the street if needed). My running is improving very slowly. I plod along and try not to look too far ahead so I won't get discouraged by the next big hill. Sometimes I feel so thirsty that if I think about it too much, I'll gag. Sometimes my running feels no faster than speed walking. Other times I feel like I'm spinting down an even stretch only to slow to a bouncy march when the terrain changes. At one point my ankles were starting to hurt and I tried to let myself off the running hook, but I'm telling you, once you start consistently running you feel guilty if you skip a day. I don't know if there has been a big change in the numbers on my scale, but even if there are piles of laundry to be folded, dishes to be done and bathrooms to be cleaned, I can take comfort in the fact that I ran that day, so at least something was accomplished. Who knew running could make such a good excuse? I should have been running years ago.

p.s. Runners, why do my ankles hurt and how do I get it to stop? thank you.

Wow - that sounds like a Runner's World article to me. Maybe that is why I like to run too.
I'm guessing that your ankles just aren't used to taking the impact. I suggest Ibuprofin right after your run for a week or two and being sure not to jump up your mileage too quickly. If you do increase miles, just go up by 10 percent a week - or so they say.

Thanks, that is good advice! I want to write a post someday about how life is like a cross country race. :) Also, how much do running shoes matter?

Holy Cow - they are huge! Dan is constantly saving my body by making me get new shoes. Our favorite shoe store is Runner's Corner in Orem. They'll have you try on lots of shoes so you can see what you like best. They have fantastic service. I'm sure they would have good advice for your ankles too.
And by the way, my Beehives are already learning how life is like a cross-country race. You might want to write that article and send it into Runner's World or the New Era - whatever works (:.

Hey Gretchen, I have Saucony shoes, they are great for running! They mold to your feet and have different inserts for different support. Did you know they even have sandals that do that? You put them in the oven and then they mold to your feet! Just don't let them get too hot! =) The Fleet Feet store in AF has saucony. I think they have Nike and New Balance, too. They have really good cust. service, too. They measure your feet and have you walk, etc.

Also, I've found that if I warm up first, like just walk for 20 mins or do something like elliptical, then it isn't as jarring because the muscles are already warm. It's really helped both my knees and ankles. (Not that I'm really working out much, but when I do, it seems to do the trick!)

Thanks for being such a good example! Your family is so sweet!

Check - SHOES! I know this girl who is running in some OLD shoes that aren't even really running shoes (it may or may not be me...) Off to the shoe stores I will go! Thanks Jessica and Jacque! Good tips!

fraggle...with your recent climbing and repelling activities, I'm sure running would be easy in comparison. :)
