Our Date to the Theater

Do you know the story of Shakespeare's Pericles? It's the classic story of "I thought you were dead!" The story follows Pericles life through its triumphs and tragedies. There are shipwrecks and pirates, and throwing out a "dead" body in a trunk. After many struggles, Pericles believes he has lost his wife and daughter...but I won't tell you the end. BYU's Theater For Young Audiences was doing a production of Pericles, so I decided to take Miles. I really wasn't sure if Miles would understand Shakespeare's English, but I thought it would be worth a shot. And I had to jump at the chance to take Miles to a play that not only allowed kids, but also catered to them. Also, I love a chance to take Miles to BYU and say, "I loved going to school here. Are you excited for college?" Because kindergarten is not too young to start preparing for college. :) After the show I asked Miles if he understood everything that was going on. "I understood everything except the Spanish," he said. So I'm thinking, "did he think the whole play was in Spanish?" But then I remembered that there was indeed one Spanish-speaking character. So I decided to press for details to see if he really did understand the play. "Pericles really thought his wife was dead didn't he?" I asked. "Yes, but we knew the whole time she wasn't dead. And neither was his daughter." So I guess Miles gave away the ending...or did he? At the show they told us there would be a production of Go Dog Go in February, so I'm planning Evan's first outing to the theater too.

Before our "play" date, Miles and I took a picture together:

Miles could hardly stand the anticipation waiting for the show to start. He also seemed to think that "reverence" rules apply at the theater:

At the Wilk for a little "you should go to BYU" brainwashing. *wink*

Too funny. I'm so jealous that you are able to brainwash your children so often. And how much would I LOVE to go with you guys to a Shakespere play at BYU - you live in an amazing place with so many opportunities. I'm glad you take advantage of it!

I thought of you at the play wandering around Shakespere's old digs in London. Didn't you do that? THAT would be fun! I wish you lived close so we could go to these things together!
